Now, KPO in Patents — SciTech Leads India’s Emerging IP Outsourcing Wave

In April 2005, The Hindu Business Line recognized SciTech Patent Art Services as one of the earliest and most promising players in what was then an emerging sector — intellectual property outsourcing as a form of Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO).

A New Frontier After Software and BPO

With over 100 multinationals establishing R&D centers in India by 2005, the country was already a global research hub. The article highlighted that corporates and research institutions needed specialist IP expertise to avoid duplication, identify the right research directions, and gain competitive advantage — and that the growing complexity of the global patent landscape was making this need more acute.

SciTech’s Early Milestones

SciTech had, by this point, secured a contract with a Fortune 50 company — a significant vote of confidence for a relatively young firm. The company had built a dedicated team of 40 to 50 professionals to service this and other engagements, serving a total of 18 companies including six international clients, as well as three US-based IP law firms.

End-to-End IP Services

Under the leadership of CEO Uma Parameswaran, SciTech offered end-to-end IP management — from patent search and database analysis to working with patent attorneys for legal inputs — enabling clients to make well-informed decisions about their R&D investments.

Looking Ahead

At the time of publication, the company had plans to double its workforce and sharpen its focus on corporate clients in the US and Europe — ambitions that would shape SciTech’s growth trajectory in the years that followed.
