Scientists & Technologists

Scientists & Technologists

R&D professionals are a core group of clients that leverage SciTech Patent Art services extensively. The services we provide cover the whole gamut of the R&D work flow, all the way from the up-front brainstorming phase to the back-end, post-commercialization monitoring phase. Many of our R&D clients view our analysts as technical support staff with very strong searching, screening and summarizing skills. Towards this end, our analysts are trained in searching a vast amount of information covering the general web, trade journals, technical publications and patents. We search through this large volume of information, screen the hits obtained based on the questions that need to be answered, and summarize the information in a succinct form, which facilitates a quick and efficient client technologist review. Our professionals are here to save your time and keep you from re-inventing the wheel. Following are some of our services that Scientists & Technologists could engage:

Competitive monitoring
Collaboration Networks
Portfolio Quality
Solution Identification
Target due-diligence
Technology landscape / trends study
White-space identification
Competitor / Technology monitoring

What is our competition working on? What are the latest developments in my technology?

Competitive monitoring is a core service offered by SciTech Patent Art to its clients who are interested in knowing the latest technological developments of competitors, new product launches, technical collaboration announcements, joint venture partnerships, and so on.

SPAs reports provide succinct summaries with detailed categorized information to bring out insights without overloading the clients with data. SPAs monitoring services source data from scientific literature, trade journals, marketing literature news articles, patents, and annual reports. Some clients receive their reports online through our client interactive portal.

Key Deliverables

  • E-mail newsletters
  • Patent/publication summary dashboards:
  • One page summaries and labelled diagrams
Collaboration Networks

Who can I collaborate with?

Collaborative network mapping is used by SPA clients to understand high value inventors or groups active in specific technology areas. Such information is used by SPA’s R&D clients for recruiting talent, tracking specific inventors and their progress, and identifying potential collaborators in their Open Innovation programs. SPA conducts such analyses based on patent information and scientific publication data. Such information is combined with SPs proprietary ranking algorithms to extract high-value records which are then mapped to identify high quality research groups and talent.

Key Deliverables

  • Collaboration intensity between industry / academia
  • Inventor networks
  • Specific technology areas of collaboration
Portfolio Quality

Which companies have the highest quality patent portfolio?

Many SPA clients have a need to assess the quality of a patent portfolio for reasons related to patent acquisitions, patent divestitures, collaboration partner assessment or efficiency of R&D spend. SPA has developed a proprietary algorithm for assessing the quality of a patent portfolio, based on a set of objective metrics such as citations and family members.

Key Deliverables

  • Overall portfolio quality
  • Patent strength assessment by company
  • Patent strength assessment by company by technology
Solution Identification

What solutions have others tried to solve this problem in the past?

One core task of many technologists is to identify innovative and practical solutions for problems of business relevance. SPA’s technologists work closely with clients in this endeavor by researching technical resources, e.g., patents and technical publications, identifying core problems that these publications address and documenting the solutions they developed. This technical analysis is presented to SPA’s clients in a succinct form so that the client is now empowered to make a decision on next steps. Sometimes, just the documentation of the problems that others are working on is itself very insightful for an R&D manager looking to craft a new R&D strategy.

Key Deliverables

  • Past approaches and benefits
  • Popular solutions, trends, key players and their focus approaches

Target due-diligence

Is this a company worth acquiring?

Target due-diligence is typically initiated by SPA's clients when they are evaluating a particular company for acquisition, joint-venture or joint-development programs. This service involves the assessment of a competitor's technology portfolio – patents, publications, and products – to develop a comprehensive snap-shot of the company's technologies that have been commercialized or in-development.

  • Scope of the study
  • Business profile
  • Technology overview
  • Patent insights

Technology landscape / trends study

How do I categorize and understand a complex patent/publication portfolio?

SPA analysts conduct various types of landscape analyses based on client needs. Technical documents (patents, literature, etc.) are extracted, screened, analysed and visualized as required to answer clients’ questions. Taxonomy/ontology study is conducted to develop a deta understanding of the various categories of technology that exist in a particular technical domain and in addition, help explore technology trends, competitive strengths/weaknesses, emerging companies, etc. SPA analysts can rapidly categorize large patent and publication data sets, typically over 10,000 documents. SPA’s AI/ML tools come in handy to meet client quality, turnaround and cost requirements when handling large data-sets.

Key Deliverables

  • Detailed ontology development based on a scientific review
  • Portfolio comparison based on scientific taxonomy
  • Technology cluster mapping
  • Filing trends by company

  • Geographic trends
  • Technology status summaries
  • Trends in novelty
  • Application development
  • Technical literature trends
White-space identification

Where are the big entry opportunities?

SPA’s clients use white-space analyses to identify spaces where there is room for technology development, patentability or freedom-to-operate. These analyses help clients find new opportunities, e.g., potential product features or combinations of features that no company has targeted, important applications of a known technology that are yet to be explored, new technologies that are emerging or pre-emptive IP strategies that could be pursued to constrain competition. Conducting such analyses requires an in-depth knowledge of the technology area and an understanding of key technology parameters that matter. SPA’s technical experts study the technology space in detail to understand core dimensions of technology that matter, and then develop cross-feature maps that highlight white-spaces.

Key Deliverables

  • Insightful, multi-feature maps
