A taxonomy study helps SPA’s clients to develop a high-level understanding (please also see Technology Landscape section) of the various buckets of technology that exist in a particular technical domain and then identify technology trends, emerging companies, technology clusters, etc. SPA analysts can quickly categorize large patent and publication data sets typically running over 1000 of documents and generate a taxonomy that will help develop the needed understanding. Taxonomy studies can be conducted with both patent and publication data. Due to the huge volume of data, to keep the analyses cost-effective, SPA analysts typically leverage text-mining tools with analyst oversight to ensure categorization fidelity.
