Technology landscape

A typical objective of SPA for their clients who ask for a technology landscape is to develop a detailed understanding (please see Taxonomy Study section as well) of key technology trends, major players in a particular technology area, life-cycle of specific technologies, potential white-spaces, emerging technologies, emerging companies, and so on. To help clients with such understanding, SPA analysts conduct highly tailored searches in patent databases and non-patent literature to extract the records, and then conduct in-depth analyses to answer the questions raised. Various numerical analyses (e.g., 2-D and 3-D time trend charts) are combined with more complex analytics (e.g., Venn diagrams, cross-correlation maps) to extract critical insights that help the clients make decisions on future technology development.

Key Deliverables :

  • Technology life-cycle defined by timeline and geographical trend
  • Identify technology developers and manufacturers
  • Review highly vs. sparsely dense areas of research
  • Identify technologies or applications with promising opportunities

Target due-diligence

Target due-diligence is typically initiated by SPA clients when they are evaluating a particular company for acquisition, joint-venture or joint-development programs. This service involves the assessment of a target’s technology portfolio – patents, publications, and products – to develop a comprehensive snap-shot of the target’s technologies that have been commercialized or in development. By leveraging other services in SPA’s portfolio, e.g., patent ranking and patent-product matching, a realistic view of the target’s technology strengths is presented in a succinct manner for client evaluation.

Key Deliverables :

  • Understanding strengths and limitations of patents / products
  • Identify potential infringement
  • Identify IP available for licensing

In-licensing target identification

SPA’s clients who are involved in Open Innovation activities are frequently in search for promising technologies with a strong application potential. SPA has conducted many patent and technology landscaping studies where it has helped identify specific companies and inventors with promising technologies. Such studies also involve an evaluation of the quality of the target’s patent portfolio, life-cycle stages of the various technologies, and a legal status review of the patent portfolio.

Key Deliverables :

  • Conduct multiple searches to identify patents of interest
  • Review claims to assess validity and enforceability
  • Asses commercial potential of relevant patents
  • Propose multiple options for patent acquisition or in-licensing

Researcher identification

Collaboration network mapping is used by SPA clients to understand high value inventors or groups active in specific technology areas. Such information is used by SPA’s R&D clients for recruiting talent, tracking specific inventors and their progress, and identifying potential collaborators in their Open Innovation programs. SPA conducts such analyses based on patent information and scientific publication data. Such information is combined with SPA’s proprietary ranking algorithms to extract high-value records which are then mapped to identify high quality research groups and talent.

Key Deliverables :

  • Conduct competitive collaboration intelligence
  • Identify researchers for hiring
  • Identify open innovation partners
  • Identify suppliers or service providers

Technology alerts

Technology alerts are used to keep a watch on the landscape – how competitors, customers and other peripheral players are adapting their technologies to meet market needs. SciTech Patent Art has been providing technology alerts, including patent and non-patent literature alerts, for over a decade to various global clients. Our alerts include summaries that capture succinct summaries abstracts of key inventions, technical publications, product launch documents, etc. For clients with large teams where multiple members need to access the alerts, we have developed an interactive patent alert service that provides a dashboard along with mapping capability as well. Please visit our CloudIPTMsection to learn more.

Key Deliverables :

  • Patent and non-patent literature alerts
  • Highlight summaries of key inventions
  • Web enabled report format
